My Daughter's Wedding: What Could Go Wrong, Did Go Wrong

๐ก This Week’s Real-Life Lesson:
“My Daughter's Wedding: What Could Go Wrong, Did Go Wrong”
They say weddings are joyful but stressful. Ours was…a bit more than that.
What started as a picture-perfect plan turned into a series of misadventures that would rival any sitcom wedding episode. But through the chaos, what emerged was something even more powerful than a flawless ceremony, a story of love, resilience, and preparation that every physician-entrepreneur can learn from.
๐Where I Was: A Father Preparing for His Daughter’s Big Day
I was gearing up for one of the proudest moments of my life, my daughter Hannah’s wedding. She's a remarkable young woman. From mission trips in Haiti to six months of service in Africa, to a creative writing degree earned with faith and perseverance, she embodies grit, grace, and a commitment to calling over comfort.
She met and fell in love with Ryan, the son of a longtime local pastor. Their story was one woven with purpose. As a father, I was filled with emotion and gratitude.
And then came wedding week…
What Happened: A Comedy of Errors
1. The Lawsuit Out of Nowhere Just days before the wedding, we received news that a long-dormant car accident from two years ago had now resulted in a lawsuit against Hannah. It was a gut-punch of timing. But thankfully, our family had the foresight to carry robust auto insurance with legal representation and an umbrella policy through my micro-corporation. What could’ve become a financial and emotional nightmare was covered.
๐งพ Is This Deductible? Yes. My umbrella insurance, tied to my professional corporation, is fully deductible due to the risk exposure I face as a physician and entrepreneur. Learn more about how to do this in our free guide:

2. Her Car Dies Next, during the wedding week, the axles snapped on her 2007 Prius. The verdict? Beyond repair. Scrap metal. The timing couldn’t have been worse.
But again, because we had prepared, we had funds set aside not just for the wedding but for unexpected life events. I handed over my own car for them to use during the wedding and honeymoon, and we’ll help them buy a new one when they return.
3. The Weather War The Indiana heat and humidity decided to break records. An outdoor wedding suddenly had to become a hybrid indoor-outdoor event. What saved the day? A church and a community.
Ryan’s father, the pastor, opened up his church. Together, both families transformed the sanctuary into a reception hall and the church lawn into a wedding venue. An army of family and church volunteers spent the week setting up, and stayed up late after the wedding tearing it all down to reset the sanctuary for Sunday services.
4. The Cookie Catastrophe As if we needed another curveball, the “wedding cookies” were printed with the wrong bride’s name. I don’t know who “Jennifer” is, but she certainly wasn’t upstaging my Hannah to marry Ryan on this day. In case you are curious, Ryan never had a former girlfriend named Jennifer. ๐
You can’t make this stuff up.
What I Learned: Love Covers the Chaos
Every disaster, disappointment, and disruption was met with something stronger:
-
Preparedness.
-
Community.
-
Love that shows up.
When the week began, I thought we were preparing for a wedding. What we got instead was a masterclass in resilience, the power of shared support, and the f the same values we teach at PEA-SimpliMD every week.
The Surprising Micro-Business Insight
Being a micro-business owner isn’t just about tax savings or professional autonomy (though I love both). It’s about creating margin and resilience in life.
Because I’d structured my personal and professional life intentionally—
โ With deductible insurance policies
โ With rainy-day reserves
โ With asset protection baked into my business
—We were able to absorb a week of unexpected crises without derailing the joy.
Every physician should have these buffers in place, not just as a business strategy but as a life strategy.

A Daughter’s Story, A Father’s Gratitude
Let me tell you about the bride.
Hannah is unlike anyone I’ve ever known. From the moment she was born, there was a quiet fire in her soul. She’s a seeker. not just of knowledge, but of purpose. We shared a life-shaping road trip with just the two of us when she was 10 years old, served side-by-side in Haitian orphanages, and watched her courage bloom during six months in Africa.
She writes with honesty, lives with conviction, and loves with intensity.
And now, she’s married to a man who honors all of that in her. Watching Ryan cherish Hannah reminds me that the best things in life often come not from our plans but from our pivots.
The best business strategies are the same. Build flexible systems, protect what matters, and surround yourself with people who have your back.

Final Reflection
Hannah and Ryan are now off to the Smoky Mountains for their honeymoon, riding in my car, blessed by their families, and surrounded by the grace of a story that unfolded far better than we ever planned.
And me? I’m sitting here reflecting on the beauty that comes out of the broken. The joy that arises when systems hold. The love that wins.
And the deep satisfaction of knowing that, as a physician entrepreneur, I was ready, not just for business, but for life.
