Think Like an Owner: Build Around What You Love

This Week’s Ownership Mindset

"Focus on the things you are for, not the things you are against"

Many of you spend your days cataloging what you’re fed up with, charting, prior authorizations, administrators, patients who demand antibiotics, EMRs that don’t work, endless meetings. It’s easy to build your identity around frustration.

But what if that’s the wrong operating system for a fulfilled, entrepreneurial life?

What if you rewired your mental model to build around what you love—not what you hate?

The Trap of the Frustrated Identity

Let’s be honest: medicine often trains us to be critics. We’re taught to find errors, minimize risk, anticipate what might go wrong. That’s excellent when you're treating sepsis, but dangerous when you try to build a business or redesign your life.

You’ll never create something remarkable by only reacting to what you don’t want. You must define what you're for—what you believe in, stand behind, and want to build.

The entrepreneur doesn’t just critique the system. She builds the alternative.

Rewiring the Physician Mindset

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: employees are trained to be reactors. Entrepreneurs are trained to be creators.

And the biggest leap you’ll make in your journey from W-2 to 1099, from frustrated doc to fulfilled micro-business owner, is this:

❝ You stop organizing your identity around what you don’t like, and start organizing it around what you love building.

Do you love working with underserved communities? Build for them.

Do you believe healthcare should be simpler and more affordable? Design your business around that belief.

Are you passionate about teaching? Create content, courses, coaching.

Whatever it is, lean into it. That’s where your energy, revenue, and impact will come from.

📘 My course Doctor, You Are a Business can help you make that leap, step by step.

What You Build Will Reflect What You Love

I didn’t build the Physician Entrepreneur Academy to rant about the corporate takeover of healthcare. I built it because I love seeing doctors realize they’re business owners.

I love showing them how to take control of their schedule, income, and legacy.

That’s my North Star.

So what’s yours?

If your micro-business isn’t built around something that energizes you, it will slowly become just another job.

But if it is, watch out. That’s when you get momentum, freedom, and fulfillment.

Ask Yourself This Week:

  • What am I for in this next season of my career?

  • What do I love enough to build around?

  • Where can I stop reacting and start creating?

When you make decisions from that place, your business becomes a mirror of your purpose—not just a tool for survival.

Throwback Wisdom

"Don’t build your identity as a protest. Build it as a possibility."

That line came from an early Doctor Incorporated blog post where I explored the mindset shift from frustration to freedom. You don’t become fulfilled by fighting the old, you become fulfilled by building the new.
