How I Wrote and Self-Published My Best-Selling Book with Scribe Media

You know that persistent nudge? The one that says: “You have something important to share, and it needs to be in a book.”

That nudge grew louder for me as I kept coaching physicians inside our PEA-SimpliMD community. I realized I had a message that needed permanence—not just blog posts or podcasts, but a published book that could empower clinicians to take back control of their professional lives.

So I decided to write my book, Doctor Incorporated: Stop the Insanity of Traditional Employment and Preserve Your Professional Autonomy.

What followed was a nearly year-long journey of shaping raw ideas into a book that thousands would read—and that would land as a bestseller in multiple categories.

I'm going to be honest, it was tough and took up nearly all my free time. My wife was particularly relieved when it finally wrapped up.

Here’s how I did it—and how you can too.

๐Ÿงญ Where I Was

I had the raw content. Years of coaching doctors, building micro-businesses, writing for platforms like KevinMD, and publishing on my own blog, The Independent Physician, meant I had hundreds of pages of material. But raw content is not a book.

I needed a process. And more importantly, I needed a partner who could help me respect my time, sharpen my message, and take it all the way to print.

That’s when I found Scribe Media. They’re the same team that’s worked with high-level thought leaders like David Goggins and Nassim Taleb—and they’ve built a system for entrepreneurs and experts to turn their knowledge into bestselling books.

โœ๏ธ What Happened

I chose to work with Scribe’s guided author program.

It started with structured interviews that helped pull the core themes and stories out of my head. Scribe's editorial team helped organize my insights into a narrative arc that clinicians could connect with emotionally and practically.

What followed:

  • Manuscript Development: 6 months of outlining, refining, writing (yes, I wrote every word), and editorial review.

  • Dedicated Time Blocks: I booked writing retreats at my own short-term rental, Simpli SoHa, so I could unplug and write without distractions.

  • Professional Editing: Scribe's editors provided three rounds of revision—developmental, copyediting, and proofreading. I found out that editors, much like coaches, aren't there just to cheer you on; they're there to push you to improve your manuscript. For me, it was a real love-hate relationship.

  • Publishing Support: From cover design to uploading on Amazon to crafting marketing copy, Scribe handled the logistics I didn’t want to learn.

The result? Doctor Incorporated debuted with #1 bestseller status across entrepreneurship, medical ethics, and healthcare policy categories. And more importantly, it became a movement catalyst inside our PEA community.

๐Ÿง  What I Learned

Writing a book is not about vanity. It’s about leadership.

It’s about staking a claim in the conversation. For me, it was this: Physicians should be businesses. Micro-businesses, to be exact.

This book now sits at the core of what I teach in our PEA Explorer Membership. And it has sparked new opportunities—coaching, podcasts, speaking engagements, and partnerships.

๐Ÿ’ก The Surprising Micro-Business Insight

Self-publishing is not DIY anymore. It’s Do-It-Smart.

Partnering with professionals like Scribe Media gave me time leverage. I still owned the ideas—but they owned the production flow. If you’re a clinician with 20+ years of lessons, patients, innovations, or systems worth sharing, your voice matters.

And your book matters.

That’s why I’m officially an ambassador for Scribe Media—and I’d love to help you explore if it’s a fit.

๐Ÿงพ “Is This Deductible?”

Tip: I had to find undistracted escapes to work on my book manuscript. So I “rented” my STR, Simpli SoHa, to myself for multiple weekends.

The rental fee, food, and travel expenses were fully deductible under business content creation.
